The Industry Behind the Scenes – 1,010 companies and 135 startups funded: the true Italian AI industry

Behind the headlines of million-euro rounds and the most photographed startups, there exists a much broader fabric that concretely supports the Italian artificial intelligence ecosystem. There are 1,010 companies today offering AI products or services in Italy, and of these, 135 startups have received funding over the last five years. A silent but decisive industrial base for the real diffusion of technology.

The overall AI market in Italy reached €1.8 billion by the end of 2025, with a growth of 50% over the previous year. Almost half of this value—46%—derives from generative artificial intelligence solutions or hybrid projects combining GenAI and traditional machine learning, while the remaining part remains linked to more established machine learning approaches.

Among large Italian companies, 71% have already started artificial intelligence projects, but only one in five uses it in a truly pervasive way—meaning integrated into multiple corporate functions simultaneously. 84% of large companies possess licenses for generative AI tools, signaling that access to the technology is no longer the problem: the challenge lies in the ability to transform it into stable operational processes.

This scenario opens an enormous space for system integrators, specialized consultants, and vertical solution providers, who become the missing link between technological potential and real adoption. Telling the stories of these realities, which are often less visible than the big investment rounds, means providing a more complete and useful picture of how AI is truly taking root in the Italian productive fabric.
